碑主人张迁，字公方，陈留己吾（今河南宁陵境内）人，曾任城（今河南洛阳市西北）长，迁荡阴（今河南汤阴县）令。故吏韦萌等为追念其功德，刊石立表以纪之。碑阴三列，上两列各１９行，下列３行，刻有捐钱人题名和钱数。碑阳隶书15行，满行42字，共567字， 字径3.5厘米。碑阴刻立碑官吏41人衔名及出资钱数，共3列41行323字，隶书，字径3.5厘米。额篆书“汉故谷城长荡阴令张君表颂”，2行12字，字径9.5厘米。书体意在篆隶之间又能有意曲屈，似汉印之缪篆。１２字分两行而无列，布局紧密大小错落，浑然一体，或挪让、或盘曲、或长短、刚健有力，实为额中之妙品。
此碑在明初掘地时发现，立于东平儒学明伦堂前，当时碑文完好可读，到明正 德年间，仅残缺5字，“东里润色”4字尚好；清乾隆年间，“东里润色”“东”字 泐半边，“润”字泐半边，其水旁尚存中点，“色”字与下边的“君”字泐大半。 建国后，在东平县政府院内建亭一座，立碑于内。1966年移至岱庙炳灵门，外置玻 璃罩加以保护。此时残泐65字，不可认读的36字。1983年10月移岱庙碑廊。
此碑自出土以来，为历代金石、书法家所推崇。词旨淳古，隶书朴茂，字体方 整中多变化、朴厚中见媚劲，蚕不并头，雁不双设，外方内圆，内捩外拓，是雕刻、 书法艺术的珍品。
最早著录此帮的是明都穆《金薤琳琅》。清初顾炎武《金石文字记》疑其为后为摹刻。但大多数学者认为，刻碑书风朴茂端直，非汉人不能为，再加上自然剥落的痕迹，更非人为，帮为原刻。１９７３年出圭的《鲜于璜碑》与此碑风格相近，而《鲜于璜碑》早《张迁碑》２１年，二者均为汉隶中方笔之典型。
《张迁碑》流行的有明拓本、清拓本、影印本和翻刻本。明拓本为最早版本，而又以其第八行“东里润色”四字完好的故宫博物院藏本为最佳称“东里润色”本。

清 杨守敬：已开魏晋风气，此源始于《西狭颂》，流为黄初三碑之折刀头，再变为北魏真书《始平公》等碑。（《平碑記》）
清 刘熙载：汉碑严密如《衡方》、《张迁》，皆隶之盛也。
清 康有为：至于隶法，体气益多：凝整则有《衡方》、《白石神君》、《张迁》。（《广艺舟双楫》） </P>
