据清代钱曾《读书敏求记》载："百寿字图一卷，（南宋）绍定已丑（公元1229年）静江令史谓刻于夫子岩。（明）正德丁卯（公元1507年），昆明赵壁又得二十四体，编成一书。
“百寿图”是颂扬年高的吉祥图案，表达人们追求长寿的心愿。明宋国桢《涌幢小品》载：“御史张敩之家藏大《寿》字一幅，自其始祖所遗。字崇（高）四尺有七寸，楷体黑文，其点画中皆小‘寿’字白文。一一作别体，满百无一同者。”从而得知，这是用不同字体的小寿字，凑足一百，组成的一个大“寿”字，用作颂扬老人长寿的吉祥画。
“百寿图”一般不拘于百字体，选择适当的字体也可以。字体有圆形的篆书体为“圆寿字”，长方形的称为“长寿字”。
“百寿图”还有用不同字体兼以绘画形式，组成一百个寿字的样式。其中除了象形、钟鼎、鸟文、小篆等各种字体外，还有绘刻如太极图、蝌蚪文、桑叶形、花瓷罐、古彩陶以及垂柳、荷花、寿桃、葫芦、绿竹、祥云、蛟龙、博古文玩等花样组成的“寿”字，集中了传统的“寿字大全”。
用百寿图、花字体等不同形式的“寿”字图案广泛用于建筑、家具、文具、雕刻和衣料等方面。
