<P> “照夜白”是唐玄宗李隆基的坐骑，图中“照夜白”系一木椿上，昂首嘶呜，四蹄腾骧，似欲挣脱缰索。北图用笔简练，线条织细有劲，马身微加渲染，雄骏神态已表现出来。图左上题“韩干照夜白”六字，系南唐后主李煜题字。左边上方有“彦远”二字，似为唐代著名美术史家张彦远的题名；左下有宋米芾题名，并盖有“天生真赏”朱文印。是流传有绪的名迹。
韩干，陕西蓝田人，生活在唐玄宗时代。少时家境清寒，常为酒家送酒。大诗人五维发现他的才能，资助他学画，“初师曹霸，后自独擅”，遂成为画马名家，玄宗时供奉内廷，玄宗曾令他师事陈闳画马，他说；“臣自有师，陛下内厩之马，皆臣之师也。”（《唐朝名画缘》）可见他的成就是从现实生活的观察，写生所取得的。</P>

<P> 唐代大诗人杜甫《丹青引》，曾间接评论曹霸的弟子韩干画马的技巧。《牧马图》描绘骏马肥硕雄骏马的英姿。图中画黑白二马，一奚官虬髻戴头巾，手执缰缓行。此图线条纤细遒劲，勾出马的健壮体形，黑马身配朱地花纹锦鞍，更示出其神彩；人物衣纹疏密有致，结构严谨，用笔沉着，神采生动，纯是从写生中得来。元汤垕《画鉴》说韩干“画马得骨肉停匀法……至于传染，色入兼素”。宋董卣《广川画跋》说；“世传韩干凡作马，必考时日，面方位，然后定形骨毛色。”这些记载从这幅《牧马图》可得见其大概。《牧马图》原为《名绘集珍》册中之一帧，左有宋徽宗赵佶的“韩干真迹，丁亥御笔”题字。
