《栾书缶》是栾书祭祀祖先时盛酒的用器，高48.8厘米、口径16.5厘米。器身及盖各有四环纽，纽作斜角云纹。自颈、肩及於上腹有错金铭文五行四十字，盖内铸铭两行十字，由左而右，字皆嵌金，为栾书子孙祭祀祖先而作，但多年来习称栾书缶。栾书又称“栾武子”或“栾伯”，是春秋时晋国大夫，执政14年，于鲁成公四年（公元前587年）将中军，卒于公元前573年。</P>
<P> 错金相嵌铭文，始於春秋中期。错金铭文多见於兵器，铭文往往数字。象《栾书缶》这样长篇错金铭文，十分罕见。也是传世最早的错金铭文铜器。《栾书缶》铭文十分精美，铭在器物显著的位置上，具有装饰作用，文字异体较多，字呈纵势，线条圆婉转，显得婀娜多姿。此缶无论从器形还是字体看，都属楚国作风，故可能是后来入于楚国的栾书子孙的遗物。
